Washington, DC – May Several, 2007 – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Patrick McNeill with a three-year entry-level contract beginning next season, vp and general manager George McPhee reported today. In keeping with club coverage, financial terms of the deal just weren't disclosed. McNeill will sign a novice tryout agreement with the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Contains, for the remainder of the season.
McNeill, 20, was drafted by Washington in the fourth-round (118th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He played some seasons with the Saginaw Spirit with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), publishing 129 points (53 goals, 129 assists) in 249 career games played.
A 6’0’’, 199-pound native of Strathroy, Mpls, McNeill led the Spirit with scoring this year from his defensive position, posting 58 points (22 goals, Thirty-six assists) in 58 game titles. He appeared in 6 playoff games during 2007, scoring three goals and adding two assists for a few points. All told, McNeill played in 10 career postseason games for the Nature, notching nine points (four targets, five assists).
McNeill was known as Saginaw’s Team MVP and many Valuable Defensemen during the 2005-06 season.
